UIAA Newsletter - December





Tomorrow - 11 December - marks the annual United Nations’ International Mountain Day (IMD).The theme of this year's IMD is biodiversity. The UIAA has been incredibly active in the build up to IMD working with a number of partners and members such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Mountain Partnership, the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) and biodiversity-focused projects showcased as part of the UIAA Mountain Protection Award. On 11 December itself, the UIAA will be represented at two online international conferences. 

UIAA President Peter Muir is a guest at Mountain Partnership's Mountain Biodiversity Mattersevent (14:30-16:15 CET). Details on how to follow the event live can be found 
here. The UIAA will also share a livestream on its Facebook channel.

UIAA Mountain Protection Commission President Dr Carolina Adler is a panellist at the 
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)'s Adventure for Climate Action conference (15:30-16:45 CET). Details on how to register for the event can be found here. UNEP will provide the UIAA with a recording of the event to share on its channels.


The UIAA is saddened to hear about the death of legendary British mountaineer and its honorary member and long-time delegate Doug Scott.

Doug passed away in the early hours of Monday 7 December at the age of 79. Confirming the news, the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), for whom Scott was a patron, paid tribute on its website. The UIAA has shared tributes to Doug from across the global in the following article.
